Where Should Your Thumb Point When Coming out of the Bowling Ball?

Bowling seems like it should be easy. After all, you simply throw a heavy ball down a lane and knock down as many of the pins as possible. However, all aspects of the approach, including the position of the feet, bend of the elbow and release of the ball can affect your score. The position of your thumb upon release of the ball can affect the aim and rotation of the ball, so keeping it in the proper place throughout your swing is important.

Instructions

    • 1

Line up by standing square to your target, whether that is pins or arrows on the lane. Your thumb should point toward that target as you cradle the ball before your throw.

    • 2

Swing the ball behind you as you approach the lane, keeping your wrist and forearm stiff. Keep your thumb pointed at your target spot.

    • 3

Roll the ball off your hand at the end of your approach, making sure your thumb releases before your fingers. Keep your thumb pointed toward your target.

    • 4

Follow through with your swing, keeping your thumb pointed toward the ceiling and aimed at your target the entire time. Your follow-through should end with your thumb facing straight up and nearly touching your forehead.
