How to Get a Better Slide in Bowling

A bowler's slide is the last step taken as the ball is released. A good slide powers the ball down the lane. Various things can affect your slide, from your shoes to your posture. Put your body in a position to deliver as much control as you need when the ball is released. Products are available that will increase the speed of your slide, but improving your posture and wearing shoes that fit well may do the job.

Instructions

  1. Body Position

    • 1

Evaluate your position. Approach the foul line with your shoulders and head over your knees. Balance yourself so you're not leaning forward with your head and shoulders ahead of your knees.

    • 2

Keep your steps even. Don't rush your steps; keep them smooth and uniform up to your slide. Walk with a bit of flex in your knees, so your sliding leg is in position for your shoe to be in full contact with the floor. When you slide, your knee should appear to be going into a deep knee bend.

    • 3

Shift your weight as you reach the slide, so your sliding shoe is at the center of your body, providing stability as you release the ball. Point the toe of your sliding foot toward the pins. Keep your shoulders, knee and toe in a vertical line as you slide toward releasing the ball.

    Check Your Shoes

    • 4
Tie your laces tight for a faster slide.

Be sure your shoes fit correctly, and provide the traction and slide they should. Your shoelaces should be tied tightly for the most slide. Reduce the amount of slide by loosening the laces a bit.

    • 5

Keep your sliding shoe clean. Use a steel brush to clean the bottom of the sole before you bowl. Brush top-to-bottom for more slide or side-to-side for a bit less.

    • 6

Keep your shoes dry. Wet soles will slow you down and make your slide stick. Carry a clean cloth to wipe down the soles if they're damp.

    • 7

Test your slide before you begin to bowl. Stand in the middle of the lane, and slide toward the foul line as you would if you were releasing the ball. This will prepare you for how your slide will feel and allow you to make adjustments before you begin bowling.
