How to Earn the Heavyweight Title

The heavyweight title is the pinnacle of achievement in combat sports such as boxing, judo, kickboxing and wrestling. In boxing, the names of heavyweight champions such as Jack Johnson, Joe Louis, Muhammad Ali, George Foreman or John L. Sullivan are remembered decades or more after their careers. Achieving a heavyweight title is difficult, and it requires you to overcome the best fighters in the world. It requires unparalleled physical fitness, determination, training, support and a little luck.

Instructions

    • 1

Decide on the heavyweight title you intend to pursue. Even within one sport, several different heavyweight champions exist. For example, in boxing, four different organizations award heavyweight belts. Some champions hold more than one simultaneously, but each organization has its own rules for awarding belts.

    • 2

Maintain your weight within the weight limit of the category as dictated by the organization you've chosen. For instance, the World Boxing Association defines a heavyweight as any fighter over 200 pounds, while the World Kickboxing Association defines a heavyweight as a fighter over 198 pounds but less than 209 pounds.

    • 3

Train constantly. A championship athlete has to be at the peak of physical prowess. Consult experienced trainers to perfect your training regimen.

    • 4

Develop a record within the organization you have chosen. Each organization will have its own ratings system, with the top-rated fighter or fighters being permitted to challenge the champion. In many organizations, a champion will be required to defend his title at certain intervals. The specifics of the arrangement will vary depending on the organization, but you or your manager will arrange the fight with the sanctioning body.

    • 5

Defeat the reigning champion to claim the title. This will be a great challenge; heavyweight champions are highly skilled, experienced and motivated. Victory means that your name will go down in history as a heavyweight champion.
