Boxing Training for a Beginner
-
Proper Stance
-
The proper stance in boxing is vital to maintaining balance while throwing punches and avoiding incoming attacks. Most novices have trouble maintaining the proper stance while training, either because their muscles are quickly fatigued or they are simply not comfortable in that position. A boxing trainer should pay close attention to a beginner's fighting stance and continually remind the fighter to correct each time the stance becomes incorrect.
Correct Punching Fundamentals
-
Many beginner boxers tend to throw looping punches with large trajectories and little accuracy. These punches are highly ineffective and can easily lead to injury. Proper boxing punches are straight and swift. They are performed with no wasted movement and allow the boxer to maintain a defensive posture to guard against counter-punches. Use training mitts and heavy bags to allow the beginner to develop correct muscle memory for the punches. After a few weeks of training, the boxer will become accustomed to the correct punching mechanics.
Endurance
-
Boxing requires endurance. Boxing requires a fighter to exert a great amount of energy in a short amount time. Punches need to be quick and forceful, and defense maneuvers need to be crisp and continuous. A boxer needs to develop muscle endurance in order to sustain a high degree of intensity over a short time span. Beginner training should incorporate this fact into the workouts. Training should mimic a boxing fight, with the boxer exerting a great deal of effort and intensity in a short period of time. A beginner boxer should perform all training, including running, the heavy bag and shadow boxing, at high intensity.
Defense
-
Defense is one of the most vital components of a successful boxer. Proper punching form and endurance mean nothing if a boxer is unable to defend incoming attacks. Defensive boxing includes slips, ducks, parries and counter punching. Each of these aspects should be emphasized during training in order to develop muscle memory. Beginner boxers are often afraid of being punched and tend to panic when defending. Consistent defensive training will eliminate this fear and equip the boxer with the necessary confidence to defend against attacks.
Stretching
-
Beginner boxers have a tendency to get injured. Novices should stretch extensively prior to and after training. Boxing exerts stress on the body. Many beginner boxers are not accustomed to activities of this intensity and their bodies tend to break down. Training with a beginner should be gradual. The boxer must develop a stable base prior to fully engaging in the sport. Stretching will prepare the body for the stress imposed on it and will prevent the boxer from experiencing avoidable injuries.
