How to Make Wall Pulleys for Boxing

Home gyms are the alternative for many fitness buffs who desire the convenience of a do-it-yourself workout space minus the high monthly fees associated with commercial gyms and health clubs. Home gym gear doesn’t come cheap -- some gear can cost well over $1,000 -- leading fitness-minded individuals to make their own, as is the case with pair of wall mounted weighted pulleys that add a boxing-inspired element to routines by primarily working the shoulders, arms and chest.

Things You'll Need

  • Tape measure
  • 3 wooden boards, 2-by-4 inch, approximately 3 feet in length
  • Carpenter’s pencil
  • Electric drill/ screwdriver
  • Wood or masonry bit
  • 8 steel holding eye bolts, 7 inches in length

  • Rope or chain

      Measure the wall from the floor to about shoulder height and mark the measurement on the wall using a carpenter’s pencil. Lay one of the 2-by-4 pieces against the wall and trace an outline around the wood, using the board as a template to ensure you’re getting the correct dimensions. Repeat to create another template that’s roughly shoulder-width apart from the first marking. You should now have two identical side-by-side markings that are couple of feet or so apart.

      Draw four descending circles on to the wall inside the perimeters of each template. This marks the location where you’ll drill to install wall mounting bolts. Outfit your drill with an appropriately sized woodworking bit or a masonry bit if your wall is concrete, cinderblock or brick. Mark and drill matching holes through two of the 2-by-4s that correspond with the holes in the wall then place one board into the template. Secure it in place using steel holding bolts.

      Use four screws into each of the four holes to attach one board to the wall. Repeat for the other template to finish the basic support beams for the pulley system. Measure down about 4 inches from the tops of the 2-by-4 supports and horizontally attach another 2-by-4 flush across the two boards. You now have a support that resembles the letter "H."

      Attach each base plate of each pulley to the flat side of the horizontal board, where the board intersects with the supports. This makes the system more stable and allows the pulleys to handle more weight. Thread nylon rope or small chain through each pulley and attach a small weight such as a lighter-pound weight plate to the end of the rope or chain on the floor. Attach grip handles to the rope or chain as directed on the product’s packaging.
