How to Get a College Football Scholarship

Your child has the talent, drive and determination to excel at college football, but you're not sure how to help him get one step closer to his football goals. You don't have to punt your child's dream to the sidelines. Getting a football scholarship can be achieved without waiting for college coaches and recruiters to find him.

      Go to camps national, state and local football camps where your child will make contact with recruiters and coaches. If you know the college your child wants to attend, be sure he attends the camps they offer there too.

      Explore the program your child wants to study. Since majoring in football is not an option, figure out a program, like medicine, communications or engineering, that he wants to study during his college career. Once he knows his interest, he can narrow down the list of potential schools.

      Research the colleges that will need a player in the position your child already plays. Look into the colleges on your list and find out which one will need a running back, defensive tackle, etc. In doing this, you won't waste your time with colleges that aren't planning to give scholarships for your child's position.

      Highlight your child's talent. If your child is playing for his high school team or another team, film your child's games. It's best to include his best plays from camps too. Then pick the best plays and make a highlight film that you can give to recruiters or coaches.

      Receive certification. When your child reaches his senior year of high school, register him with the NCAA Eligibility Clearinghouse. You're child needs the certification to make him eligible to participate in NCAA athletics.
