How to Write Sports Resumes

Type your full name in bold print on the top line of your resume.

List your contact information -- including home address, telephone numbers and e-mail address --- below your name.

Include your date of birth, height and weight. For sports resumes written for academic institutions, include your grade point average and SAT or ACT scores.

Create a bold heading called "Objectives" or "Goals" underneath your contact information. After the heading, include your sports career and educational objectives. This section should not exceed one sentence.

Detail your sports experience under an bold "Sports Experience" heading. Organize information by year, detailing your team, the team's home location and the position you played. List statistics, such as points per game, field goal percentages or rebounds. This information will vary per sport.

Don't be shy about your achievements. List any awards or honors you've received, as well as any titles or championships you've won, in an "Awards and Honors" or "Athletic Accomplishments" section.

Include an addendum section that briefly details other athletic experience you have outside of your core sport.

Include a section listing extracurricular activities, community service or relevant work experience near the bottom of your resume if space permits.

Type a list of two or three references -- such as coaches, club owners, teachers or guidance counselors -- at the bottom of your resume. Include each reference's name, position and telephone number.

Proofread your resume at least twice before saving the document and submitting it to schools or recruiters.
