How to Apply for Sport Scholarship in the USA

Applying for a sports scholarship in the USA is the easy part. The hard part is being awarded the scholarship. Many people apply for available scholarships each year in their sport, but few are awarded the money, because competition is so high among high school athletes. To be considered for a sports scholarship in the United States, you must have good enough grades to get into college, ability that will translate to success at the college level, motivation to work toward getting a scholarship and exposure to college coaches and recruiters.

      Make a list of colleges you would like to apply to. The list should be populated by considering location and academics as well as athletics. Also consider the tuition and the division of the school. Start with schools in your ideal location and branch out until you have a list of 25-50.

      Get the name of the head coach for your sport. On your list you should put the name of the coach for your sport as well as their mailing address and email address in addition to the name of the school. This information can be found on the athletics website of the college.

      Prepare your sports scholarship application materials. Your materials should include a target letter, resume, information sheet and game film. The target letter should include your purpose for sending the materials, which is applying for a sports scholarship. Your resume should list your accomplishments in your sport and in the classroom. The resume can also contain references. The information sheet should contain your contact information, including address, telephone number, email address, position, date of birth, height and weight. The game film should be clips of some of your best moments from the most recent season.

      Mail your materials. Mail your application packets to the coaches at your target schools. Follow up by sending an email to each coach in two weeks to make sure that they got your materials.
