What Happens Once I Sign a National Letter of Intent?

Once you sign a national letter of intent you will no longer receive recruiting calls or contact from other colleges looking to recruit you. You sign to play with that college for one year with financial aid under NCAA rules.
  1. Facts

    • The national letter of intent is a contract that binds the institution to that student-athlete. The institution will provide financial aid for one academic year for that student. After the year is up the contract can be renewed. The institution must notify the student if the contract will not be renewed.

    Ramifications

    • When the student-athlete does not attend the institution for the whole year that student could face eligibility penalties. The student could be ineligible for college competition; financial aid can be canceled or reduced if the athlete quits the sports program.

    Rules

    • When signing the national letter of intent you must be 21 or older to sign without a parent. If under 21 a parent must be present. The coach of the college cannot be present when you are signing the national letter of intent.
