How to Measure the Kick Zone on Classic Cross Country Skis for Racing

The kick zone on traditional cross country skis is the area on the ski base that flexes as you "kick" the ski forward. Knowing the kick zone on your skis is critical for proper waxing. As a general rule, the kick zone is between the end of the binding at the heel to approximately eight inches in front of the binding at the toe. To get a more precise kick zone for your skis, ask a friend to assist you with the "paper test".

Instructions

    • 1

Set the skis on a flat, hard surface. Stand on the skis at the bindings.

    • 2

Distribute your weight over both skis by standing in the at rest position (no flex in the knees or legs).

    • 3

Ask the assistant to slide the paper under the skis, in the small space between the bindings and the floor.

    • 4

Slide the paper toward the rear of the ski, until the paper hits the ski base and stops. Ask your assistant to mark the side of the ski at the stopping point.

    • 5

Slide the paper toward the front of the ski until it hits the ski base. Have the assistant mark the ski side at this contact point.

    • 6

Get off of the skis and look at the two markings. The distance between the two markings is the kick zone. Apply wax to this area.
