How to Dive With a Homemade Snorkel

Snorkeling allows you to view the underwater world with your head in the water and a direct line of air from the surface via the snorkel. It is possible to make your own snorkel consisting of a mouthpiece and a hollow tube to get the air. There are a number of snorkeling techniques that you should learn to enable you to snorkel safely and efficiently.

Instructions

    • 1

Clamp your lips around the snorkel mouthpiece or the end of the tube. Orientate the main tube so that it will be pointing out of the water when your head is looking down.

    • 2

Practice breathing through the snorkel while your head and the snorkel are still above the surface of the water to check that you are getting an airflow through the snorkel.

    • 3

Put your head in the water. Breath slowly and deeply. If any water enters your snorkel, then make a big exhalation to drive the water out of the snorkel.

    • 4

Take a deep breath and dive deeper. Hold your breath for as long as you can before surfacing. Without taking your head out of the water exhale the breath to drive the water out of the snorkel.

    • 5

Swap your snorkel for your regulator to go for a dive. Without taking your head from the water, swap from your homemade snorkel to your diving regulator (mouthpiece). When the snorkel is out of your mouth remember to blow bubbles to keep the airway open.
