Children's Fencing Lessons
-
Younger Ages to Start
-
Fencing is a sport that requires fine motor skills, balance and the mental abilities to follow directions. Lessons will vary in age for children, but a child can start taking fencing lessons usually as young as six years old, depending on her maturity level. Fencing is a potentially dangerous sport, so children must have control over their body and have the maturity to follow instructions.
Starting As Older Children
-
Older children can start taking fencing lessons whenever they are interested in the lessons. Most programs have beginner lessons for a wide range of ages and are usually split between ages and fencing level.
Protection of Children
-
Fencing is a potentially dangerous sport due to the use of sabers, foils and epees during the lessons. The children must wear protective gear including padded clothing and masks while fencing. This protects the child's face and body from injuries that otherwise might occur. Most fencing lessons will either provide the gear as part of the fees or will have the gear available for parents to purchase. At the start of lessons, children will use foam swords rather than the traditional swords used later.
Expense of Lessons
-
Children's fencing lessons vary depending on the fencer's level, the age of the child, the number of lessons and whether private lessons are included. In general, lessons for a month will usually cost a minimum of $100 and often cost more as the child advances in the sport.
