How to Make a Deep Pocket in Hard Mesh

Hard mesh is a common choice for the lacrosse stick pocket. Soft mesh is desired for holding and cradling the ball but hard mesh provides the rigid force required for throwing. The hard mesh pocket requires a break-in period where the owner forces a pocket. The position and depth of the pocket is adjustable as the material softens and manipulates with moisture. Forming a deep pocket is achieved by working the new material at home and continuously working the pocket during practice and competition.

Instructions

    • 1

Fill a bucket with hot water and submerge the hard mesh in the water. Hold the mesh in the water for 30 seconds.

    • 2

Remove the mesh from the water and manipulate the material with your hands until it loosens and flexes. Dip in the water repeatedly until the mesh cooperates and manipulates.

    • 3

Determine the desired placement of the deep pocket. Hold a lacrosse ball on the location and push the ball into the mesh. Use as much force as possible to outline the pocket location.

    • 4

Forcefully pound the ball against the outline location until the pocket is formed. Spend at least one hour working the pocket on the new mesh. Store the stick in a dry area and allow the pocket to dry.

    • 5

Practice with the stick and pound a ball in the pocket during resting periods to continue developing the depth. Repeat the water cycle to speed the break-in period and push the pocket deeper in a short period of time.
