How to Make Field Hockey Sticks

A field hockey stick is shaped like a walking cane but held by the straight end rather than the curve. The curve is used to hit the puck in field hockey. Field hockey sticks are available for purchase in wood, metal or composite. High school regulations state that no field hockey stick may be used that is made of metal. Either a wood or composite stick is required. Make a wooden field hockey stick from 3/4-inch plywood.

      Measure the height of the individual who will be using the field hockey stick. Determine the length of the field hockey stick using the height of the individual - up to 4 feet is 29-inches long; 4 feet to 4 feet, 5 inches is 31-inches long; 4 feet, 5 inches to 4 feet, 10 inches is 33-inches long; 4 feet, 10 inches to 5 feet, 1 inch is 34-inches long; 5 feet, 1 inch to 5 feet, 4 inches is 35-inches long; 5 feet, 4 inches to 5 feet, 9 inches, 36-inches long; over 5 feet, 9 inches is 37- to 38-inches long.

      Cut two pieces of 3/4-inch plywood eight-inches wide and 31-inches long for an individual who is up to 4-feet tall. Note: Add two inches to the desired length of the hockey stick when determining the proper rectangular shape to cut from the 3/4-inch plywood.

      Place a generous layer of wood glue on one piece of cut plywood. Place the second cut piece of plywood over the wood glue. Clamp together and let dry 4 to 6 hours before cutting.

      Remove the clamps from the glued plywood. Draw the field hockey stick on the surface of one board. Use a yardstick to make the shaft. Either draw the hook directly on the wood or make a paper pattern and trace the shape on the wood surface.

      Make the rough width of the handle two-inches wide and taper the shaft to 2 1/2-inches. Work into the curve of the field hockey stick with the 2 1/2-inch width. Note: The rounding of the shaft and the hook will bring the dimensions of the hitting surface to 1 1/2-inches.

      Cut the field hockey stick from the plywood using a band saw.

      Rasp and flat file the square edges of the field hockey stick until they are rounded. Begin on the handle and work down to the curve. Rasp the edges to remove 1/2-inch of the flat surface of the face on both sides of the stick. Round the filing of the surface to make a smooth transition to the edges of the stick.

      Sand the entire stick until smooth.

      Paint the finished stick with enamel paint.
