How to Choose Field Hockey Sticks

Choosing the right field hockey stick depends on several factors: pitch position, style of play and your build. The latter is the most important -- if a stick is too long or heavy for you, no matter the intricacies of the design, you will struggle. Some field hockey sticks are more suitable for power players, others for finesse players. The best way to choose a field hockey stick is to visit a sports store and try some sticks out.

Check the length of the stick by standing it on the ground next to you. The field hockey stick should come one to two inches below your waist. It is useful to have a longer stick in defense and a shorter stick if playing in attack.

Grip the field hockey stick and check that the weight is evenly distributed. Typically, sticks are between 18 and 25 ounces. The most suitable sticks for defenders tend to be heavier (22-24 oz), for forwards, lighter (19-20 oz), and for midfielders somewhere in between to allow for both power and finesse.

Choose what type of toe -- the curved end of the stick used for striking the ball -- is most suitable for your position and style of play. "Shorti" toes are best for finesse players looking to dribble, "hook" toes for power players and "midi" toes offering both some power and some finesse.

Select the material of your field hockey stick: carbon, Kevlar and fiberglass sticks are all available and come within field hockey regulations. The material you choose depends solely on your own preference.
