How to Play Forward in Field Hockey

The purpose of forwards in field hockey is to make goals happen. To do that requires a blend of strategy, teamwork, and out-and-out aggressiveness. Field hockey is a low-scoring game, so the offense must make every shot count.

Instructions

    • 1

Watch where the opponent guarding you is. You can sometimes make an opportunity for a goal by catching your opponent out of position, especially If the opposing team is using marking (man-to-man defense).

    • 2

Try to fake out your opponent. Use fancy stick work, fake shots, misleading eye movements, or sudden sprints. If you can get past her, you've got a good chance to score a goal.

    • 3

Use passing. Pass to your teammates to set up a shot, avoid a tackle, or confuse the other team. Passing uses less energy than dribbling, which will help you to conserve energy for a drive on goal.

    • 4

Be aware of the strengths of your offensive line. One player may be better at scoring goals, while another may excel at setting up a shot or have stupendous dribbling skills. Make sure that each player's skills are used to best advantage.

    • 5

Be aggressive. When you see an opening, drive through it. When you see a shot, take it. Keeping pressure on the defense is the way to make goals happen.
