How to Make a Men's Ice Skating Costume

The sport of figure skating is one that is frequently evaluated based on the stylistic flair of the performers in addition to their skills on the ice. A key part of that appeal is the outfits selected by the skaters. While it can be tempting to choose clothing for competition that is unusual and eye-catching, you must also consider the practicality of such clothing. A man's outfit, in particular, must allow him a full range of motion, especially if he has a partner that he will be lifting into the air.

Select a solid color pair of pants made out of a loose-fitting material, such as cotton jersey, which will not impede sudden extensions of the legs. Make sure that they have a straight-leg cut and a high hem to minimize the chance of the cuff of the pants getting caught underneath your skate. Darker colors are best, as they will contrast well with the light-colored ice.

Choose a loose-fitting cotton dress shirt that will allow you a full range of motion of the arms and torso. You will be leaving the cuffs of the shirt and its top two buttons unbuttoned to assist in this goal. Roll your sleeves up over your forearms if you have a partner performing your routine with you. This way the sleeves do not get caught on her costume when you are lifting her.

Find a loose-fitting solid color vest to match your pants. The vest will serve to draw attention away from your unbuttoned shirt, and help to give you the appearance of striking elegance on the ice.
