How to Throw a Distance Driver

Disc golf is similar to the sport it's based on, traditional golf, in that the player starts in one location, the tee, and works his way toward a target. Instead of hitting a ball with a club, though, the player tosses a number of discs. Just as there are different golf clubs for different shots, disc golf discs are designed for specific types of throws. The distance disc, or driver disc, is designed for the longest throws. Players usually use it on their first throw, when there a lot of distance to be covered.

Instructions

    • 1

Go to a wide-open location such as a park where there are no people, animals or obstacles in your throwing path.

    • 2

Grip the disc with your thumb on top and your other four fingers curled under the disc. Use a fairly tight grip. Hold the disc level to the ground throughout the throw.

    • 3

Practice throwing the disc by standing in one place, cranking your arm back across your body, then swinging it forward with a fast motion. Hold the disc firmly until the force of the throw pulls it from your hand. Make sure you follow through on your throw, meaning your arm continues to swing after you release the disc.

Add a run-up once you are comfortable with the throwing motion. Stand back a few steps from the spot where you will throw the disc with the throwing side of your body toward the target. Step toward the target with your front foot (the one closest to the target), cross step with your back foot behind your front foot, then step with your front foot toward the target as you swing and release the disc.
