1
Teach your child to catch before you show him throwing techniques. Stand a few feet away from him and toss the ball gently.
-
2
Aim for his chest or waist area so he doesn’t have to struggle or run to catch the ball. Execute throws that you know he can catch. Wait to challenge him until he has gained some size and experience with the game.
-
3
Show your child how to align her hand on the football before she attempts her first throw. Place her last two fingers near the laces on the ball and explain the concept of spin when throwing.
-
4
Teach your preschooler to throw by bringing his arm far behind his head and lobbing the ball forward, using momentum to propel it. Show him how to follow through by stepping forward as he launches the ball. Tell your child that this is called an overhand throw.
-
5
Practice throwing and catching with your child until she masters the basic motions. Depending on her motor skills, hand-eye coordination, athletic ability and age, it may take weeks or even months for her to master these skills. In the meantime, think of practicing as a fun bonding activity that improves your child’s aptitude for sports.
-
6
Explain rudimentary football information and rules to your child while you practice. Present the explanation like an exciting game to engage your preschooler’s interest and help him retain information.
