How to Be a Good Football Punter

A football punt is one of the most important aspects of the game because it establishes the line from which the opposing team will start its run. After the punting team kicks the ball, it runs down the field to tackle the opposition before they have a chance to gain yardage. Each punter attempts to gain the maximum distance and air time so his team can run down the field to meet the ball as quickly as possible after it lands.

Instructions

    • 1

Go to the ball when it is snapped back to you. This will give you extra time to kick, before the other team can run to your team's side of the field.

    • 2

Grip the ball from the back half with all your fingertips. Cradle the bottom of the football and ensure the laces are up.

    • 3

Stretch the ball in front of you with your hand holding the base of the back. Take three large steps and then push the ball out directly in front of you, far enough so your leg will swing and kick the ball in a fully stretched position.

    • 4

Drop the ball so it falls flat, horizontal to the ground. Kick the ball with the flat part of the top of your foot.

    • 5

Swing your leg straight in front of you with your toe pointing out. Make contact with the ball at about the height of your knee.
