1
Hit the weight room. Typically speaking, tackles need to concentrate on building brute strength and size, while ends need to focus on building explosive power. Plyometric drills and explosive lifting moves like the clean-and-jerk help ends build the type of power required to excel in the position.
-
2
Practice agility and footwork drills regularly, always focusing on explosiveness. Whether drills focus on stopping running backs or moving to the ball, focus on getting into position for the play as quickly as possible. Obstacle course and pylon drills can help with agility.
-
3
Assume the proper stance on every down. Take a shoulder-width stance on running downs and a split stance, if desired, if a pass is anticipated. The back should be kept straight, the head looking at the offense and the fingertips lightly on the ground. Concentrate on staying light on your feet and ready to move at a moment's notice. Don't get caught flat footed on the snap.
-
4
Practice getting separation from the blocker. This relies on keeping your head up and your hands moving to get away from the block. A defender that can't get off a block is effectively neutralized. Work on heads-up moves with hand motion both when working on actual blockers and on pad drills. The head should pull away from the blocker while the hands drive the blocker away.
-
5
Practice specific moves utilized by defensive lineman. The spin move involves staying low and spinning around and out of reach of the blocker. The swim move involves using your hands to turn the shoulders of a blocker so you can move by him. The push-pull move is used when a blocker has his weight too far forward. Fight him for a second, then suddenly release and let his momentum him pull him off balance so you can reach your gap or make your move.
