What Are the Straps Around the Forearms of Football Players?

People are starting to see a growing trend of football players wearing bands on various parts of their arms. No medical or athletic benefit exists for wearing them, according to the New York Times. The bands are either elastic bands that are worn strictly for fashion or dri-fit bands, worn to absorb sweat.
  1. Fashion Statement

    • According to Giants linebacker Danny Clark, the bands that are worn on the arms of football players are simply for fashion. He reported to the New York Times in an article published Sept. 17, 2008, that it's a good look for him and that the bands help to show his muscles. He wears them above his elbows to accomplish this look. The elastic bands can be worn on different parts of the arms; many players wear them above the elbow.

    Popular Trend

    • Wearing the band above the elbow is popular among many NFL and college players, according to the article in the New York Times. Kids who aspire to be like them have also been seen wearing these bands. Some players in the NBA wear the band on just one arm. Most players do not wear the bands at practice.

    Dri-Fit Arm Bands

    • Some players wear arm bands made of socklike material. These bands are sometimes worn above their elbows. Unlike the elastic band, these have some benefits. They are used to absorb moisture to keep the arm dry and warm.

    How Bands are Made

    • According to the Times, football players use different strategies to make bands to wear. David Bowens, Jets defensive end, pulls a 2-inch wristband up to his elbow. Another player cuts a little edge from the elastic band to create a skinnier one. Others are known to use old socks that have been cut to create a band. Athletic tape is being used as well, as this also creates the look they are going for.
