Lineman Techniques

While the speedy, skilled positions get all the attention in the game of football, it's the offensive and defensive linesmen that do much of the grunt work. Offensive linemen protect the quarterback from attack and open up lanes for the running back. Defensive linemen seek to put pressure on the passer, making him throw the ball in a hurry or out of rhythm. The offensive and defensive lines face each other across the line of scrimmage, and each play is a battle of muscle and will between these two opposing forces.

Instructions

  1. Three Point Stance

    • 1

Stand erect with both feet facing straight downfield. Move the right foot back half a step if you're right-handed. For lefties, slide the left foot back.

    • 2

Bend at the waist and knees. The shoulders should remain parallel to the ground. Your head should be upright with your eyes focused on your opponent. Keep your right hand up and in front of your right knee. Place your left hand on the ground with the fingers extend.

    • 3

Rock your weight forward onto the balls of your feet, ready to surge forward when the center snaps the ball. Use your left hand for balance, but don't put a lot of weight on it.

    Pass and Run Blocking

    • 4

Surge into the defender's chest when the play starts. Read his movements, and maintain a position between him and your quarterback. Put your hands on his chest and drive your legs forward at full power.

    • 5

Angle your body to one side or the other to open up a running lane. Avoid grabbing the defender's helmet or ramming into his knees.

    • 6

Rush quickly to the corner of the line for a run play that goes to the outside. You want to keep the defender from getting into the open field, therefore making more space for the ball carrier to gain yards. Don't allow any separation between yourself and the defender. If he gets a head of steam and room to maneuver, he has a better chance of defeating your block.

    Rushing the Quarterback

    • 7

Look at the positioning of the offensive lineman across from you. Notice if he is favoring to the inside or outside of your position.

    • 8

Rush out of your stance as quickly as possible. With your legs driving forward, try to get around the blocker on one side or the other. Use your arms to push the blocker's shoulders down and away, ideally using his own weight and momentum against him.

    • 9

Spin quickly to the other side of the blocker if he holds his ground. A quick spin may surprise him and put him off balance. Keep pushing with your legs and arms.

    • 10

Rush straight at the defender if he's too athletic for you to get around. Start from a low position and drive up and into his chest with all your strength. Push him backwards into the quarterback to disrupt the play or force a hurried pass.
