How to Block a Big Guy When You're at Center

Football is a grueling, physical sport known for big impacts and stunning displays of athleticism. In contrast to the skilled positions, such as quarterback and wide receiver, offensive and defensive linemen perform the game's less glamorous tasks. The center position, for example, snaps the ball to the quarterback and then wards off an equally large, rushing defensive lineman. An effective center will give his quarterback time to make an accurate pass, or help open a running lane for the speedy halfback.

Instructions

    • 1

Position your body in a normal three-point stance with your knees bent and one hand on the ground. Lean forward slightly and be prepared to spring forward immediately after the snap.

    • 2

Keep your head up and your eyes focused on the defender that you need to block. He may try and get around you on the left or right, so be ready to cut off these gaps if necessary.

    • 3

Drive your body up and into the numbers on the defender's uniform. Put your hands right on his chest while you push forward with your legs. You want to have a lower center of gravity so that you can push the defender off balance and gain the advantage.

    • 4

Use your hands rather than your body to block the defensive player. This will help you maintain balance and control the block.

    • 5

Keep pushing the defender backwards until the play is over. Avoid wrapping him up with your arms or taking his legs out from under him, because these maneuvers will draw a penalty if one of the officials sees them.
