Does Throwing a Side Arm Football Make It Go Further?

Proper throwing mechanics are the foundation of good quarterbacking. The steps include the pre-pass triangle, the L position, leading with the elbow, and full arm extension through the wrist and fingers. A sidearm delivery is sub-optimal because the wrist and elbow are improperly aligned, reducing both power and accuracy.

Instructions

    • 1

Grip the football with some space between your hand and the ball. Hold the ball with two hands so that your elbows are level and your wrist is cocked. You should be able to draw a triangle shape between your elbows and the ball.

    • 2

Rotate your arm backwards so that your forearm is at a 90-degree angle with your upper arm. This is known as the L position.

    • 3

Lead with your elbow so that it is ahead of the shoulder as you release the ball. Your forearm should be cocked backwards at a 45-degree angle to your upper arm, with your elbow out in front about six inches.

    • 4

Complete your release so that your arm is fully extended through your wrist and fingers. The snap of your wrist as the ball comes off your fingers is what gives the throw its spiral motion.
