Football Hairstyles

Hairstyles worn on the soccer or football field sometimes carry over off the field. For some players, it's a military style that catches the attention of fans. For others, it's a stylized haircut that fans love, such as the famous spiky style worn by David Beckham. Modern day football players wear their hair in a variety of styles, both long and short. Football hairstyles are popular with professional players, as well as college athletes, amateur players and those still enrolled in high school or junior high.

  1. Mohawk

    • The Mohawk is often associated with the punk lifestyle, but it's also grown more popular with professional athletes. The basic style involves shaving the entire head, except for a small portion. A strip of hair from the back of the neck to the forehead, is left behind. Players have the option of customizing or personalizing their hairstyle by growing the strip of hair longer or even coloring it. Players have also appeared with a Mohawk and dreadlocks covering the rest of their head. A fohawk is another option, which involves applying gel to the hair and twisting the top part of the hair, to make it look like a Mohawk. With a fohawk, the player doesn't need to cut his hair.

    Military Hairstyles

    • The high and tight is one of the more popular military hairstyles used by football players. A high and tight keeps hair on the top of the head, but removes the hair from the back and sides of the head. The hair on the top is typically short and players may opt to keep hair on the sides and back, but keep it slightly shorter than the top. The buzz cut is another popular option. With a buzz cut, the stylist uses a razor to get the hair as short as possible. Military cuts are used frequently by football players because it keeps the hair out of their eyes, which is important when playing.

    Long Hairstyles

    • Longer haircuts are less popular with football players because it's difficult to control the hair. With longer styles, simply keeping the hair out of their eyes, is important. The mullet hairstyle is still used by some players because it combines the best of both worlds, by keeping the hair short in the front and long in the back. The back of the hair is long enough to form a ponytail, but mainly stays out of the face. Ponytails are also common, as it keeps the hair out of the eyes.
