There are some defenders who are tough to get past but are limited in their use of the ball. Others might be accomplished passers but error prone. Indeed, there may be some who have both of the aforementioned traits but struggled to defend wide areas.

Then there is Toby Alderweireld. Not many defenders have every possible skill in their locker but the Belgian is one of them. His experience of winning the Eredivisie three times with Ajax, La Liga with Atletico Madrid in 13/14 as well as reaching a Champions League final, is a huge part of Tottenham’s progress.

When he came into a Spurs defence in 2015, he instantly helped improve those around him through both ability and leadership. Before he joined, Spurs conceded 53 goals in the 14/15 campaign, more than any other team in the top 13. Since he joined, they have become one of the best defensive teams in England.

Whether playing in a central duo with Jan Vertonghen, or a back three alongside the latter and Eric Dier, Alderweireld has been consistently impressive. He is, without question, the best centre-back in the Premier League.
