League One Right-back of the Season: Barry Fuller

Fearless Fuller
Barry Fuller joined AFC Wimbledon in the summer of 2013 and instantly became a key figure at the club. He got a clean sweep at the end-of-season awards following his first campaign at Kingsmeadow, supporters and professionals alike won over by his commitment to the cause.
That mentality may stem from his willingness to savour his career, which was threatened in 2011 with a very bad injury while he was at Gillingham. His battling qualities saw him handed the captaincy a year after joining, following Alan Bennett’s exit.
Fuller’s no-nonsense defending means the Wombles have looked secure on the right since his arrival while the 32-year-old’s efforts in attack are unrelenting, if not always successful.
What the ex-Gillingham man perhaps lacks in technique, having played outside the top two divisions throughout his career, he more than makes up for with his dedication and leadership. Fuller has an excellent work rate, considering his age of 32, which is underpinned by a high level of fitness.
Wimbledon have kept 11 clean sheets this term. Some credit for that must go to James Shea, who has proved an upgrade on Ryan Clarke and dynamic midfielder Jake Reeves, one of League Two’s stand-out performers last term. However, Fuller’s infectious energy has been central to the team spirit that has been cultivated by Neal Ardley and his staff.
