Man City 0-0 Stoke Player Ratings: Stubborn Shawcross

A frustrated KDB – skysports.com
A stubborn defensive display saw Stoke City hold Manchester City to a goalless draw, despite a late rally from the hosts. But how do players on both teams rate?
Manchester City
Willy Caballero – one sharp save from Diouf early on and a simpler one from Martins Indi, otherwise untested. 5
Bacary Sagna – struggled against Sobhi early on. His runs off the ball in the second half were more adventurous than they had been in the first and this helped De Bruyne. 5
Nicolas Otamendi – one good ball over the top for De Bruyne just before the break and was composed in possession. 6
Aleksandr Kolarov – his trademark, powerful free-kick was on target and the closest City came in the first half. Had a solid game. 7
Gael Clichy – didn’t get forward to support Sane often enough in the first half, but improved after the break. 6
Fernandinho – played a nice one-two to create a chance for Silva but otherwise didn’t assert himself on the game, with or without the ball. 3
Yaya Touré – one or two powerful runs but ran into traffic at times and his forward passing left a lot to be desired. 4
Kevin De Bruyne – quiet until Silva’s arrival and his move to the right wing. After that, he was heavily involved and drilled some good crosses in. 7
Jesús Navas – the shortage of runners breaking into the box when he was ready to cross meant he either took too long waiting for them or his deliveries went to an opposing centre-back. 4
Leroy Sané – a lively performance which improved when Clichy started getting forward. End product lacking at times though and should have buried that chance at the end. 6
Sergio Agüero – often forced into deep areas in the first half. Had a couple of good chances after the break, one of which he fashioned himself. A disappointing display by his high standards. 3
David Silva (on 57) – after he came on, City gradually went from slowly probing to attacking the final third at will. He was at the centre of everything. 8
Kelechi Iheanacho (on 76) – looked a tad off the pace. 4
Stoke City
Lee Grant – only had to make one save all game, from Kolarov’s free-kick. 5
Phil Bardsley – kept Sane quiet in the first half, but found it harder in the second when he had to cope with the German as well as Clichy’s overlapping runs. 5
Ryan Shawcross – booked in the first half but made some crucial defensive interceptions in a no-nonsense display. 9
Bruno Martins Indi – a good performance, if marred by mishitting arguably Stoke’s best chance in the first half. 8
Erik Pieters – got forward to help create Stoke’s better openings in the first 20 minutes, but struggled to handle De Bruyne’s runs in the latter stages. 6
Mame Biram Diouf – arguably Stoke’s best attacking player in the first half and cut the supply to Sane well. One or two knocks affected his second half performance and he had to be taken off quickly. 7
Geoff Cameron – ran the show in the first half but later he found himself getting dragged into wide areas, which opened up gaps. 7
Joe Allen – played an influential role behind Stoke’s strong first half, but ran out of steam when Whelan came on and he was asked to perform a more advanced role. 6
Ramadan Sobhi – one or two good early runs, but waned in influence thereafter. When he didn’t have his pace, he lacked the technical nous to compensate. 3
Jonathan Walters – worked hard and held onto the ball well early on, but tired in the latter stages when he was given little service. 4
Saido Berahino – linked up well with Walters early on and answered some question marks about his application. Was largely feeding off scraps. 5
Ibrahim Afellay (on 69) – lacked a degree of defensive discipline. Diouf’s exit didn’t help Stoke’s cause. 4
Glenn Whelan (on 79)
Gianni Imbula (on 85)
