The Cupping Drill for Pass Protection

Play Type:     Pass Protection

Purpose

You must have good teamwork and technique for successful pass protection. This drill teaches linemen the cupping shape to create a pocket and protect the quarterback.

Setup

Coach sets up in the QB position with offensive linemen in front of him, on the line of scrimmage.

The Cupping Drill for Pass Protection

Execution

  1. Coach calls Hut and the ball is snapped
  2. The linemen fire out, then form a cupping shape to create a pocket and protect the QB
  3. Linemen continue to chop feet and punch with the hands until Coach signals the end of the drill

Coaching Tips

Emphasize quick chopping feet, while maintaining a low center of gravity.
