Quarterback Drill: The “Pull Down” Drill

In today’s video blog post, we are talking about a quarterback drill that is essential for quarterback throwing mechanics. It is called the “Pull Down” or “Over The Fence” drill.   This quarterback drill emphasizes getting on top of the football and pulling it down.

Quarterback Drill: The “Pull Down” Drill

  • Find a fence that is about 7 feet high
  • Have the receiver stand about 5 feet behind the fence
  • The quarterback will take a 3 step drop
  • Once the quarterback gets to the top phase of the throw, he is going to pull the ball down and try to hit the receiver right in the nose.

If you release the football too early, the football will go high. If you release the football too late, the football will go down. This is why you want to get right on top of the football and pull down and get that nice effect to drive that football downward on the downward plane, and have the point of the football traveling upwards.

As the quarterback gets good, you can manipulate the distance of the receiver. You can also manipulate the “Wave Drill” with this same technique.

This is a great quarterback drill to emphasize proper throwing mechanics in the aspect of pulling the football downward, which a lot of quarterbacks don’t do. They have a high release but they release the ball too early and don’t understand that you have to get on top of the ball and pull it down.
