Effective Football Practice Drills for Catching

In today’s video blog post, we are talking about some very effective football practice drills for catching, including the “Team Catch”, “Back to the Ground” to practice rapid fire throws and catches, and “Reach Drills” off the goal post or net to emphasize reaching for the football.

Team Catch Drill for Catching

  • 2 receivers face each other with their hands up
  • The quarterback or a coach will throw them the football
  • The idea is for the receivers to focus and use just one hand to catch the football
  • After a series, have the receivers switch sides so they drill using both hands

Back to the Ground Drill

This drill is to emphasize reaching for the ball as opposed to letting the ball come into your chest.

  • Receivers lay on the ground, with the quarterback or coach tossing them the ball.
  • The receivers arms cannot leave the ground, therefore he is forced to reach out and catch the football
  • You can also create a rapid fire where you give the quarterback several balls, and work your way down all of the receivers.

Reach Drill

The emphasis of this drill is for the receivers to reach around the pole or a stationary object, and again they cannot let the ball come into their body.

  • This drill can be done on a goal post, or any pole that is available.
  • Receivers stand behind the pole, and the Quarterback or coach will throw the ball in front of the pole and the receiver has to reach out and catch the ball.
