Receiver Drills – Isolating and Improving Your Weak Hand
There are physical advantages that make the truly great receivers exceptional – like Randy Moss for example. And it is possible to improve your speed and quickness – but for the most part
what separates great receivers from good ones is their level of concentration, and their consistency in maintaining that level of concentration.
That’s why I’m always trying to find new and interesting ways to test my receivers concentration. Instead of putting them through the same 5 and out, or inside slants over and over, I switch it up, and force them to make awkward, unorthodox catching motions – because things rarely work out in-game like we hope they will in practice.
Ball Dribble
This is a great way to teach players timing and familiarity with the ball. It’s fairly simple. Just have them hold the ball, one handed, outstretched away from their body. Now with their hand on top, palming the ball, they will lift up and release,
lofting the ball just slightly into the air, and then grab it with that same hand on the top of the ball once again. And then do it again. Players should be able to get a good rhythm, and rip off at least 10 in a row.
To up the level of difficulty, have a players do this with a ball in each hand. First synchronized, and then alternating, for a true test of mind and body!
Team Catch
This is a really fun drill for the kids, as they have to team up, one hand each, to catch the ball together. Lined up facing each other, like a corner and a receiver, a passer will throw the ball to them. As it arrives, they will each use their near hand, and catch it together. Not only does this work on focus and concentration, but you can also vastly improve your ability to catch with a weak hand that you might favor and neglect otherwise.
