Football Practice Drills – Razorback Running Back Drill
I’ve added these football practice drills to our practice plans this season. They are simple and bring immediate results. The first drill is designed for running backs. I actually learned about this drill this summer at a coaching clinic in Fayetteville, Arkansas. The second is a favorite defensive drill.
Razorback Running Back Drill
Have teammates stand 5 yards apart, 3 yards in from the sideline, each holding a shield by the ends (like holding a bat).
The running back runs along the sideline while his teammates swing the shield at him (high, low, or combo).
The object for the running back is to stay in bounds while defending his body either by ripping through high hits, stiff arm on low hits.
Have backs run through the drill 3 times each against either of the shield strikes (high, low, or combo).
Great drill we have incorporated into our practice plans.
Here’s another favorite football defensive drill of mine.
Line up players in single file.
You have 2 or 3 cones lined up with a player at each cone “defending” their cone.
On the whistle a player charges after the cone trying to slap the cone, the player defending the cone blocks the charging player and tries to keep them from touching the cone.
Once a player reaches the first cone they immediately go after the 2nd cone then the 3rd cone.
