Tackling Drills Football – Shuffle-Rally-Fit Drill

One of my favorite linebacker tackling drills football is one we call the Shuffle-Rally-Fit drill. It is adopted from a high school drill (experienced MLB’s & ILB’s Full contact).

Shuffle-Rally-Fit Drill
1.   Place 5 cones (LT,LG,C,RG,RT) 3 yds apart, to signify an offense line gap.   (Tackle dummies laying down work best).
2.   RB & MLB face each other-8 to 10 yds apart. (Line up opposite over the center cone or bag)
2     RB & ILB face each other-8 to 10 yds apart. (Line up opposite over LT or RT cone or bag)
3.   Coach stands BEHIND LB and use fingers to show the RB which direction & hole to run through.

Goals
1. To teach ILB to take 1st step DOWN HILL every play.
2. Shuffle- to fill gap
3. Rally- to LOS (Meet RB @ LOS)
4. Fit- Break down into good form tackling position INSIDE OUT tackle.   Encourage RB to try and make a move at LOS but stay within the gap i.e. cones and/or bags.
