How to Make an Undercut

When an undercut is mentioned in golf, it is often referring to as chipping. Chipping is used when the player is relatively close to the green, but too far to putt. The chip pops the ball up in the air, making it look like the the golfer undercut the ball to get it airborne. A proper chip can land the ball just a few feet from the pin with great accuracy.

Instructions

    • 1

Select a club with a low or high loft depending on your preferred undercut, or chip, type. The lower clubs will cause a lower loft and high roll, while the high lofted clubs will cause a high flop onto the green with minimal roll.

    • 2

Pick a target on the green where you want the ball to stop.

    • 3

Grasp the club low on the grip. This will add for a better controlled feel when chipping.

    • 4

Use a very narrow stance and put your feet very close together. The ball should be even with your back foot.

    • 5

Keep the ball close to your feet and shift your weight to your front foot.

    • 6

Flex your elbows and swing your club, as if you were putting. Bring the club evenly back and finish through the ball.
