The Differences Between Ping G10 & G15 Drivers

Ping designed its line of G10 and G15 drivers with almost matching specifications in size (460 cc), shape and wall thickness of the club face. Both clubs are designed to promote accuracy and forgiveness, making them ideal for golfers of all skill sets. With all these similarities, you might think that the two clubs are identical, but there is one main difference between the two that makes the G15 slightly longer off the tee. That difference comes in the way the club heads are weighted.
  1. G10 Club Head

    • The head of the G10 driver has a larger than average face (the area that comes in contact with the ball) and deeper crown (the top of club head), which widen the sweet spot, making the club more forgiving. The majority of the weight is located at the back of the club head, lowering the center of gravity, which promotes a high launch and reduced spin for longer carry. These weights, however, are positioned internally (inside the club head), which is not a feature shared by its more modern counterpart, the G15.

    G15 Club Head

    • The G15 club head has most of the same features as its predecessor, the G10. It has the same large face and deep crown for forgiveness and the majority of the weight is positioned at the back of the club head to lower the center of gravity, creating longer distance and less spin. However, these weights are positioned externally (outside the club head) on the surface of the club sole. This allows the center of gravity to be slightly further back than the G10 and therefore increase the launch and decrease the spin that much more.

    Pro and Cons

    • Both clubs have almost identical features with one slight difference that can add distance off the tee. However, the G15 is a newer club and, in most instances, more expensive than the G10. While there may be a definite difference in the weighting, only you can decide whether your abilities as a golfer are able take advantage of that difference, and whether that slight increase is worth the money.

    Counterfeit Clubs

    • As of May 2011, Ping is no longer manufacturing G10 drivers, though they are still available at approved vendors, such as golf courses and golf retail stores. Should you attempt to purchase a G10 or G15 driver from an unauthorized source, such as an Internet auction website, you are running the risk of purchasing counterfeit equipment. Whenever possible, compare potential merchandise against known-to-be-authentic merchandise to see if there is any difference in logo, insignia or design. Obviously, the best way to ensure that you are purchasing authentic Ping drivers is to buy direct from Ping or Ping-approved vendors.
