How to Groove Downswing

The biggest variable in many golfers' game is their golf swing -- specifically the downswing, when the power is generated -- determining your distance off the tee and the fairway. The downswing also controls at what point you strike the ball, which can mean the difference between a hook, fade or a shot that is "dead solid perfect." Learning how to groove your backswing, meaning make the same exact swing every time, is a key component in developing consistency in your game.

Instructions

    • 1

Begin you backswing as you normally would. Stop when you get to the top of the backswing.

    • 2

Slide your dominant hand down the shaft to the part of the grip that meets the metal on the club. This causes the elbow on your front arm to remain straight while causing your back arm to fold naturally.

    • 3

Move your top hand back down on top of your bottom hand in its normal position and swing normally. Repeat this several times, then try to keep the same arm positions when you begin your downswing.

    • 4

Alternate between moving your hand down the grip and your normal swing until they start to feel similar. Monitor where your arms are when you begin your downswing -- have a friend help you, if necessary.
