How to Troubleshoot an SG4

When your SG4 SkyCaddie rangefinder fails to measure distances accurately, don't give up on your golf game. You can modify how the device powers off or even reset it back to factory defaults, if necessary. The battery level, the way you hold the SG4, and the sky and outdoor surroundings also determine how well the device functions. Check all of these things first and you will be back on the golf course in no time at all.

Charge the battery until it has a full charge before you play. Connect the PC USB cable to the back of the device so that the cable points downward. Connect the AC adapter to the cable port. Connect the AC adapter to the wall outlet last. Wait until the backlight automatically turns off to indicate a full charge. Charging may take up to 4 hours for 12 hours of uninterrupted play.

    • 2

Press the "Power On/Off" button and verify that the device is turned on. Press the "Right Soft Key" to unlock the keypad, select "Yes."

    • 3

Press the "Main Menu" button. Toggle the joystick up, down, left or right to navigate through the Main Menu. The joystick is located in the lower-middle bottom section of the device. Press the center of the joystick to make your selections. Use the left/right soft keys to select the functions shown on the bottom right and left of the display.

    • 4

Select "Advanced Menu." if your SG4 powers off too soon or too late. Select "System Settings," then select "Auto Off." Select "30," "60," "90" minutes. Alternatively, select "Never" if you do not want the device to automatically power off after a certain period of inactivity.

    • 5

Verify that the SG4 has warmed up sufficiently prior to using it, if the LCD fails to display. It typically can take up to 10 minutes for the device to be fully functional after it's powered on.

    • 6

Move the SG4 where the sky is clear. Move it away from buildings, metal, glass, heavy foliage and other obstructions while in use.

    • 7

Move the SG4 further away from your body if the signal strength is weak. Point the antenna at a 45- to 90-degree angle at the sky to improve the reception. Charge the battery if the signal is still weak and the battery icon displays less than a full charge.

    • 8

Confirm that the SG4 stays on during play. Because data is continually downloaded, satellite communication will be interrupted if the device is repeatedly turned off and on during short periods.

    • 9

Press the "Main Menu" button if problems still occur. Select "Advanced Menu," then select "Reset."

    • 10

Contact SkyGolf customer service if problems continue. First, press the "Menu" button to begin to familiarize yourself with accessing your SG4's diagnostics information. Select "Advanced Options, then select "Diagnostics." Select "Satellite Info," "Test LCD," "Test Buttons" or "Test USB." The customer service representative may ask you to access your device's diagnostic information to assist in troubleshooting during the call.
