How to Hit Fairway Wood Clubs

Golfers often choose to hit a fairway wood when their ball is on the fairway, but is still too far from the green to hit a long iron such as a 2- or 3-iron. However, many golfers have trouble hitting their fairway woods consistently. Sometimes they top the ball and it dribbles in front of them just a few yards. Other times, they swing too hard and end up slicing the ball. Golfers who hit their fairway woods properly can avoid both situations.

Instructions

    • 1

Hold the club so your non-dominant hand is at the top of the grip.

    • 2

Place the head of the club just behind the ball. Step backward until your arm is nearly extended.

    • 3

Stand so your toes face the golf ball. The ball should be just behind your leading foot.

    • 4

Flex your knees and stick your butt out slightly so your spine is straight.

    • 5

      Look at the ball.

    • 6

Bring the club backwards and over your dominant shoulder. Bring it as far back as is comfortable. Swing the club forward and extend your arms so the middle of the club head strikes the ball. As you swing, rotate your hips so that, by the end of the swing, they face your target. Keep your eye on the ball all the way through your backswing.
