How to Motivate Teenage Boys in Sports

Teenage males are often stereotyped as being disinterested and difficult to motivate. However, participating in team sports may help turn their lives around for the better. The important lessons learned through team sports, such as teamwork, dedication and focus, will not only help them on the field of play but will give them a basis they can continue to build on throughout their adult years as well.

Instructions

    • 1

Talk with the teenage boy to better understand his goals and how he feels about sports. You do not want to force him into participating if he really does not want to, because that would be counterproductive. Allow him to choose which sport he would like to join and support him no matter the choice.

    • 2

Create a workout plan with the teenager that allows him to begin training before the season starts. Helping the teen get used to the strain of practice and competition will help him be better prepared when the season starts. In addition, training alongside the teen will help motivate him during the off-season.

    • 3

Praise the teenager for his improvements during training. Point out areas where he is doing better, such as being able to lift heavier weights or run a faster mile. Showing him where he is succeeding will help keep him motivated to participate.

    • 4

Keep the parents involved and informed of their teenager's progress within the sport. The parents can help keep the teen motivated while at home and also reinforce the importance of sticking through the tough points of competition.
