How to Teach Kids How to Run Faster

Teaching a child to run faster will not only increase their running abilities, but also encourage them to take part in sporting activities to improve their health and social skills. Running is a healthful activity that can be enjoyed throughout life. An urge to go faster brings about healthy competition, too. Building a training program that the child feels comfortable with is the first step.

Instructions

    • 1

Arrange a regular time to train. Getting a routine into place will help focus the attention of young runners so that they can obtain the fastest running speeds. Meet at least twice a week for an hour to improve times effectively.

    • 2

Design a training program to improve the coordination and sprinting technique. When creating the program, keep it varied to maximize the enjoyment for the young runners. Use a combination of different skills to help them run faster.

    • 3

Get the trainee to practice sprinting techniques. One way of doing this is raised knee jogging. Run for 10 meters while lifting the knees higher than usual, then sprint for another 10 meters. Repeat this three or four times.

    • 4

Teach leg speed to quicken the running time. Set a course length of 60 meters to be completed as fast as possible using large strides. To encourage the runner, set a goal time to complete, or have a group race to compete for first place.

    • 5

Train the proper arm movements, as well as leg movements. Teach the kids to push forward faster by moving their elbows in a straight line, parallel to the ground.

    • 6

Correct any mistakes by showing them the proper way to run.

    • 7

Repeat the skills practiced over the course of the training sessions so muscle memory adapts to the techniques. This means that their body position, and strength is maintained by their body so their speed continues to grow.
