About Durometer Inline Hockey Wheels

Durometer is a relative hardness measure used to define the hardness of a skate wheel, as well as other rubber and plastic products. Depending on the playing surface, inline hockey players choose wheels with varying durometer ratings.
  1. Function

    • In measuring the hardness of a wheel, durometer describes its durability, shock absorption and ability to grip various surfaces.

    Measurement Tool

    • Durometers exist in several versions. In all cases, a presser foot creates an indentation in the rubber or plastic, the depth of which is measured to determine the final result.

    Measurement Units

    • Hockey wheels are tested using the Type A scale, and receive a rating from 0 to 100. Inline hockey players generally choose from wheels ranging from 70A to 90A.

    Low Durometer Features

    • Wheels ranging from 72A to 76A provide the inline hockey player with excellent grip and control on the playing surface, though their suppleness leads to faster deterioration. Indoor hockey players often choose wheels in this range.

    High Durometer Features

    • Wheels ranging from 82A to 88A are fast and resilient. They are suited to rough, outdoor hockey surfaces where durability is a main concern.
