Hockey Fundraising Ideas

Hockey is an expensive sport, so quality fund-raising ideas are important. Chances are are that your supporters are just as tired of buying overpriced candy bars as your team is tired of selling them, but there are a few ways to get out of been-there, done-that direct sales and still make money for your team.
  1. "Chuck a Puck"

    • This fund raiser is done at the game, and will not only bring you some money, but should be a crowd pleaser too. To run a chuck a puck event, you will sell numbered pucks at the beginning of the game. Keep track of which puck belongs to whom. This can be done with complicated ticket systems or simply by writing this information down. At the end of the second period, invite everyone who purchased a puck to throw it into the rink. The person whose puck comes closest to the center of he rink wins half of the money raised by selling the pucks.

Anywhere from $1 to $5 is a good price for the pucks, but keep in mind the size of your crowd and what they may be willing to pay in your area. When selling the pucks, be sure to emphasize that the remaining half (after the winner gets the prize) goes back to the team.

    Recycling Soda Pop Cans

    • Whether you choose to call it "soda", "pop" or "soda pop," recycling aluminum cans can be a profitable venture. There are a number of ways to collect aluminum cans for recycling. You can send team members to homes throughout the community seeking can donations. If you decide to do this, you may put out fliers a week or so ahead of time to allow people to save their cans.

You could also consider placing recycling receptacles throughout the community. Be sure to get permission from the owner of the property. The rink where you practice and play is a good place to start. Community parks are also good places, but be sure to get permission from the local government first.

    Other Recycling Programs

    • If there are already good recycling programs in place in your community for aluminum cans, then you may want to consider one of the other recycling programs available that are geared towards fund raising.
Two popular options here are cell phones and ink cartridges. Many companies can be found on the Internet to assist with this type of fund raiser (see References 2). Most companies will give anywhere from 50 cents to $30 for used cell phones, depending on the make and model.
