How to Get the Rust Off of a Hockey Skate Blade

A rusty skate could mean the difference between you skating past a defender and shooting the puck top corner, and falling flat on your face before you reach the blue line. Rust can form when you haven't worn your skate for a while. Because rust is much softer than metal, it can chip away and deform the shape of your blade. Limiting your skate's exposure to water can help prevent the development of rust, so wiping the blade with a cloth before storing it will improve your chances of maintaining a rust-free blade.

Instructions

    • 1

Attend to your skates immediately after you notice rust. Procrastinating the treatment will only allow the rust to further develop.

    • 2

Pour a few drops of skate blade oil onto a scouring pad. Rub the rusted area with the scouring pad until the rust is removed.

    • 3

Take your skates to a shop to have them sharpened. The rust is now removed, but it has likely dulled your blades.

    • 4

Put cloth soakers on the blade whenever you aren't wearing the skates. This will prevent condensation on the blade, which could otherwise lead to the development of rust.
