How to Get a Harder Shot in Hockey

Shooting a puck hard in hockey is a mainstay for a defenceman, but every player on the ice can be a better hockey player by developing a hard shot. Defencemen are often positioned on the blue line, waiting for a pass from a teammate so they can fire at the net. A forward is usually positioned in front of the goalie to block his view. The defenceman is responsible for aiming the puck to an open corner or putting it in the air for a tip-in.

Instructions

    • 1

Skate up to the puck to add speed to your stick. This will help you create greater force and velocity in your shot.

    • 2

Turn your body so it is parallel with the puck and the direction in which you are shooting. The puck should be approximately 2 feet in front of you and roughly center with your body.

    • 3

Extend the blade of your stick up over your head and then bring it down to generate the most speed. Position one hand at the top of the stick and put the other about three-fifths toward the bottom.

    • 4

Aim for the blade of your stick to land on the ice about 3 inches in front of the puck. This will cause your blade to bend and you will create a whip in your shot.

    • 5

Strengthen your wrists and arms by practicing shooting multiple times. Line several pucks up beside each other and shoot each successively. Alternatively, you can line each puck up so you have to skate onto it for the shot.
