Instructions

-
1
Develop the technical riding skills by attending classes, practicing drills and exercising on a daily basis. Take those skills and add some showmanship to compete and win in a western showmanship class.
-
2
Enter a western showmanship class competition through 4-H clubs, county fairs or equestrian associations. Find competitions locally or country-wide by contacting the American Quarter Horse Association and requesting a schedule of upcoming events.
-
3
Wear western attire including western-styled boots, a fancy long-sleeved dress shirt, pants and belt. Read event rules to find clothing requirements for individual competitions. Custom western apparel is available online and at local equestrian retailers.
-
4
Select a calm, medium-sized horse to compete in western showmanship classes. Work as a team with your horse practicing all possible maneuvers in training sessions. Many competitions post required maneuvers on the day of the show. Be prepared for any combinations of circles, turns or side passes.
-
5
Ride your horse with relaxed hands and a good seat in the saddle. Appear relaxed and in control during all maneuvers. Keep your legs hanging straight with your feet in the stirrups. Your toes need to be lower than your heels.
-
6
Keep your transitions smooth and present your riding skills in the best manner possible. Think in the saddle and make adjustments as necessary. Remember to keep your cool and present the judges your best horsemanship. Judges look at your appearance and attitude along with your riding skills.
-
7
Show confidence in your horse and your riding abilities. Technical skills may be developed but true showmanship is an art form.
