How to Make a Team Rope

Team roping, also known as heading and heeling, refers to a rodeo event that features two mounted riders and a loose steer. The header ropes the horns or the head of the steer while the heeler ropes the back legs. Team ropes are typically made of synthetic fiber and are tied with Honda knots to create lassos. A Honda knot combines an overhand knot as a stopper to create an adjustable loop that is used by cowboys and team ropers.

      Take one end of the rope and tie an overhand knot. This is done by crossing the tail behind a point a few inches behind the edge, then pulling the tail over the rope and through the loop. Leave about 4 inches of free rope at the end and pull the knot tight.

      Tie a Honda knot using the overhand knot as one end. Make a larger loop and pull the overhand knot under and over the rope. Pull the knot through the loop as you would an underhand knot but do not tighten the knot. Instead, pull the knot over the rope again and back through the loop in the opposite direction. Pull the top end of the loop and the other end of the rope in opposite directions, securing the overhand knot at the base of the loop.

      Grab a piece of the midsection of the rope and pinch two sides together to form an arc. Feed the arc through the loop and pull the rope through to create a lasso.
