The Proper Way to Throw a Heeling Rope
Instructions
-
-
1
Create a large loop in the rope. The heeling loop is larger than the header loop.
-
2
Position your right hand with the segment of rope leading to the spoke close to your palm, and the segment of rope that leads to the loop at your fingertips. Close your fingers lightly over the loop.
-
3
Time your approach to the header's throw. Once the header ropes the steer's horns or neck, ride to the left of the steer. Position your horse's withers parallel to the steer's back legs at about one or two feet behind.
-
4
Bend your right elbow behind your head. Swing the loop at a 45-degree angle over the backside of your left shoulder. Swing at an angle over the horse's left ear.
-
5
Watch the movement of the steer's back legs as it runs. Aim for the loop to fall as the legs leave the ground.
-
6
Deliver the throw out toward the right and across at the steer. Do not throw straight ahead; the angle will aid the eye of the rope into position.
-
7
Lift the rope with your right hand to pull it taut as it encircles the back legs.
-
8
Sit back on the saddle to cue the horse to stop. Once the steer is stopped, position your horse so that it faces the steer.
-
9
Wrap a section of the rope's other end around the saddle horn with your left hand once or twice. Pull on the end of the rope to keep it taut. This move, known as the "dally," is required in team roping competition.
