How to Stand When Pitching Horseshoes

Horseshoes is a well-known game played by two or four people. With easy setup and inexpensive materials, the game is played in many backyards. Horseshoes, u-shaped bars, are tossed at a metal stake in the ground to score points. Although the method and rules of horseshoes are simple, pitching does require a certain technique to execute the game properly. Pitching does not just involve throwing the horseshoe at the target, it involves standing in a distinct position as well.

Instructions

    • 1

Place your feet together behind the pitching line so that if you step forward, you will still be behind the line. For men, the pitching line is 37 feet from the stake. For women, juniors and elderly people, the line is 27 feet from the stake. For children under 9 years of age, the pitching line is 20 feet from the stake.

    • 2

Raise the horseshoe with your dominant hand and aim it at the target, while your feet are still together. Do not bring your hand in front of your body. It should remain on your dominant side.

    • 3

Take a step forward with the foot opposite your pitching hand. At the same time, lower your pitching arm back past your body to create a swinging motion.

    • 4

Step forward with the same foot as your pitching hand. At the same time, bring the horseshoe forward with your pitching hand and let go of the horseshoe. Proper footwork creates momentum for the horseshoe to reach the stake.
